Sadie’s World

Like all dogs, Sadie apprehends her environment through smell: she is “led by the nose” to scope out interesting spots to explore. Sight is a secondary sense in dogs, and what they see is limited in palette to black, white, blue and green/yellow. Unlike humans, dogs are endlessly fascinated by even the most mundane and can focus attention on every leaf or tree stump with each visit to the forest. I have come to appreciate the seemingly unremarkable on our walks together, learning from Sadie to look with fresh eyes and marvel at this world that we share.

Sadie's World is my contribution to the collaborative project called Correspondences, a project conceived by 10 Canadian photographers. The following is the artist statement for this project:

Inspired by the process-driven work of the Kinship Photography Collective, Correspondences represents the collaboration of 10 Canadian artists who seek to instill greater intimacy and connection with each other and the more-than-human world. We reject the primacy of the individual in art production in favour of a more collaborative approach and recognize our world as a community in which all life forms have presence and agency. Moving from the vast oil fields of Alaska to the teeming insect life that thrives in the shadow of Ottawa’s tallest building to the imagined worlds of dogs and children, our work considers the land and water and creatures surrounding us as our correspondents who communicate with and respond to us. Here, we invite you to see these “touched” landscapes as we do: as (un)familiar places of wonder and mystery and awe.
